Broken Clock

Most of my life I’ve been a broken clock
Living for that one fulfilling minute
Where I am synchronised with all other beings
The metronomic bliss of fitting in

It was one such moment when you met me first
Reassured by my face that the world wasn’t late
But the second you looked back — I stopped
My hands stuck in place, at last, at my worst

Yet when I read your face you didn’t seem to mind
And to my delight I watched a kind smile unwind
Ever since you’ve returned to my side like clockwork
Now those are the best minutes of my day

Until a thought struck; why me and not some other clock?
And just like that the ticking of so many smiling faces
Who returned to me later with agitated scowls
Worked it’s way through every cog in my machine
Do you hear me chiming over this furious inner whirring?
Please tell me, what use is a clock when it can’t show the hour?

Somehow you find the time to be surprised
As if this thought had never crossed your mind
And then like laughter you spread your love

“All those other clocks
Tell me the time
When I look at you
It reminds me
That you’re mine”
